Introduction To The NIHL Seeding Round

Where the heck is the rest of the schedule?

If this year is your first NIHL experience, I hope this explanation of the seeding round helps you out a little bit.

The NIHL season is divided into an 8 game Seeding Round which goes from mid-September to the end of October, followed by a regular season of 16 games that goes until the end of January.  Playoffs start in late February.  When I inquired about the seeding round with Larry Beller of NIHL, he offered the following overview of the seeding round:
Clubs register teams at the level they feel are competitive for the seeding round.  Teams that are clearly better than the place they have been seeded will be moved up and those that are clearly seeded higher than they should be will be move down.  The end goal is to ensure, as equitably as possible, a competitive season with as much parity as possible.
In short, if your Silver team just romped all over the competition these last few weeks, you are moving up to Gold.  About 10% of teams move up or down in a given year.  There are no specific rules governing the process, more like an overarching philosophy of "We will tier as many teams as will configure a competitive division with a balanced schedule" (quoting Larry again).

The tiers will be announced next week, and regular season games can start on November 8th this year.

  1. Thank your higher power for seeding rounds. It does lead to a competitive season which is more enjoyable for the kids. To bad CSDHL doesn't do this. Why? This year for example there are a few teams that shouldn't be in it (one teams coach even told the parents they should not be in) but are in because of the parents ego's. The team hasn't won a game yet. I wonder how much fun the kids are having losing every game. P.S. The coach is a great coach
