COACHES: In Today's Blog Post PAUL LUBANSKI Offers This Fun And Very Creative Method For Addressing GAME-PLAY Errors During Live Action!
By Paul Lubanski
Today, I propose what I consider to be a fun and creative method for dealing with the game-play (shift-to-shift) negativity that we as coaches and players are faced with. You see, unfortunately, not-so-good things occur within the framework of any contest and we must be able to attack that "adversity" with a sense of intelligence, purpose and positivity.
With all that said, awhile back, I thought about introducing the following technique for facing the inevitable mistakes that are made per shift--regardless of the age or play-level...I hope you enjoy.
Ok, one relatively new staple/aspect of our daily lives is that ALL youngsters can comprehend is the concept of what "deletion" signifies when interfacing with a computer. In other words, they learn quite early into their virtual indoctrination that written-word mistakes made can be easily wiped away and literally made to disappear via the infamous DELETE key.
Aha...!
So how can we leverage that concept and use it in a productive/positive fashion on our playing bench?
Simple.
Carry and old PC with you on the bench and place it strategically in order to allow all players access to said PC that includes an over-sized/painted red DELETE key! Hence, if we need to sweep away (both player and coach) a just-committed on-ice/bench error from our consciousness--what do we do? WE POUND THE DELETE KEY--then LAUGH/SMILE ABOUT IT AND THE MISTAKE IS GONE!
Trust me, this becomes a fun and non-insulting, non-threatening way to move past mistakes and allow positive FOCUS to percolate in preparation for the next shift.
Wow--what a concept!
The very best coaches throughout the history of organized youth competition world-wide teach and lead in creative and an ALWAYS-positive fashion. Your turn to begin that sort of laudatory ascent within the coaching community by experimenting with the above idea.
Post launching, please send me details of the success you and the team enjoy in c/o CAYHB. I will include the most poignant stories in a future column.
Best of luck.
