COACHES/PARENTS/PLAYERS...IN TODAY'S BLOG POST--PAUL LUBANSKI EXPLAINS HOW:
HARNESSING THE POWER OF FOCUS CAN GRANT AND INCREDIBLE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE!
By Paul Lubanski
Intensely focusing the minds-eye in a certain fashion can be and is a powerful yet virtually untapped weapon in the world of sport.
Simply consider the news stories we read about in the newspaper and view on television from time-to-time regarding incredible feats of strength garnered by individuals facing sudden and grave adversity.
For example, recently a 5' 5" 119 pound 16 year-old Downriver (DETROIT AREA) teen was featured in an ABC Channel 07 news story after he managed to lift a 3,500 lb. early 70's automobile that had fallen on his grandfather. The elderly man was lying prone under the car's engine when the supporting jack gave way and thousands of pounds of pressure began crushing his chest. Miraculously, and literally within three seconds, the teen lifted the car and also dragged his grandfather out from under the massive car while holding it up with ONLY ONE HAND! And the octogenarian ended up only suffering some minor bruising and did not even require hospitalization!
Totally true story.
Talk about the POWER OF FOCUS!
Makes me wonder what sort of adrenaline rush can be gathered and unleashed for positive usage by the typical athlete in everyday team or individual competition.
Quite frankly, I believe there is NO LIMIT as to what can be accomplished in sport simply by utilizing a mere fraction of the sort of FOCUS amassed by the young teen in the story above. Just ponder the massive amount of energy he was able to harness in such a brief flash of time.
AMAZING--incredibly amazing!
Personally, I recall a moment in a big game hockey when I became so determined to score the next big goal via an intense FOCUS that I actually forgot what period we were in and how much time remained in the contest. The coolest part of it all was that I did end up tipping in the game-winner from an almost impossible angle with 30 seconds left but I was so drained post the puck going in that I almost passed out! Couldn't even celebrate! Later, I determined that I had intensely pieced together so much FOCUS that I had had an almost out-of-body experience. To me, it was well worth it though--and I surmise that most of you would feel the same.
My point here today is this: most especially so in "team-accented" competition, each player/athlete owes it to his/her teammates and coaches to do all that is possible to contribute to a successful outing. One of the very best yet most overlooked avenues to accomplishing that universal goal I state just above is by HARNESSING THE POWER OF FOCUS! Translation: dialing-in your minds-eye to a PICTURE OF SUCCESS in such and intense manner that it manufactures the adrenaline required to achieve the GOAL!
You see, If a 116 pound teen can lift 3,500 lbs. with ONE HAND, my bet is that YOU CAN blast a slap shot past the best goaltender in your league with five second left in the state championship game.
C'mon now, if you really analyze it--which appears more plausible?
Now go FOCUS and score that big goal--no excuses!
Best of luck.
