2 Choice Rule: Substitute Choice Awards Explode

The June 2011 minutes of the AHAI Board meeting include this bombshell:

[sic] there were 97 total Tier II Substitute Choice Awards: 3 / Conflicts; 14 / No team to play for; 30 / Proximity; 50 / Midget (noting that the Tier II By-law modification eased the process for many Midget applications).

That is the equivalent of the entirety of Bruins NIHL teams turning their jerseys in for new ones.  Last year, it was 20 Midget applications out of 60 awards (see our previous coverage).  So most of the 60% increase in awards was due to the new "3rd choice" for Midgets.  This change to a silly rule did little to stop Midget and JV teams from disappearing however.
