AHAI To Provide Baseline Concussion Testing

I just received this in my inbox this morning:

To all Illinois Parents, players and Hockey Clubs,
The Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois (AHAI) is partnering with AthletiCo Physical Therapy, the Midwest Center for Concussion Care and the Chicago Blackhawks to create an initiative to educate the Illinois youth hockey community on the importance of concussion management and to proactively implement baseline testing.
All Illinois hockey players ages 13 to 18 are eligible for this program at no cost (handled by the sponsors). Pre-testing will be conducted at 18 Chicago-area AthletiCo Physical Therapy, with a target start date of November 1.
Additional information on contacts, awareness training and education will be messaged later this month. The program promises to be a benefit our young athletes.

Regards,
Mike Mullally
President
Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois

This is a great move by AHAI.  Scores from pre-incident testing are used as a baseline for comparison following a concussive incident.  A player's physician will benefit from this useful data when making difficult return-to-ice evaluations for players.

The real key to reducing the danger to players from the extremely serious second-impact syndrome is the education program announced here.  We look forward to a successful roll-out of this program by AHAI.
