International Ice Centre Purchased by Canlan

According to this press release, Canlan Ice Sports Corp. announced its acquisition of International Ice Centre (IIC) in Romeoville yesterday. If you didn't know, Canlan is publicly traded on the Toronto stock exchange, has 22 rinks mostly in Canada, and is a former management company of the facility.

The rink is home to the Huskies Hockey Club, the GLJHL Chicago Hitmen, and the Rampage Women's Hockey Club.

Here are some stats on IIC:

  • 3 sheets of "ice"
  • 106,000 square feet
  • 8 acres
  • $13.8 million original construction cost
  • $450,000 recent renovation cost

Amenities include weight and cardio training room, 1,500 sf synthetic ice surface, locker rooms, pro shop, and concession stand.
From the press release:

"Today's announcement is consistent with our strategy to continue to expand our U.S. operations by acquiring ice and turf sport facilities with significant upside potential at a favourable valuation," said Joey St-Aubin, President and CEO of Canlan Ice Sports. "As a state-of-the-art ice sports complex with ideal demographics and location, we believe the IIC represents an excellent opportunity to apply our proven abilities with programming and customer experience to maximize the potential."

Allow me to translate for those of you who do not read Canadian:  "The loonie is strong against the dollar.  Your country is on sale."  More from the press release on Canlan's plans for the facility:

As owners and operators of the International Ice Centre, Canlan plans to offer multiple hockey and skating programs, including the Canlan Skating Academy, Hockey Academy and the Adult Safe Hockey League, the world's largest and most successful adult recreational hockey program. Canlan does not plan any business interruption for the existing IIC customers and expects to begin offering its branded programs to complement existing IIC products as early as July.

Emphasis added.  Let's hope they keep Stick and Puck!  More rinks need to do that ...

At around $4 million, the proceeds of the Sheriff's auction (case # 10 CH 7524) represent a substantial haircut to the $18 million in bonds issued originally.  As seen in our earlier report, the Huskies stopped paying interest in 2008 which left the final judgement in Will County Circuit Court at over $20 million.  Good Lord!  The price of hubris ..

  1. I like how you have "ice" in quotes. More like 3 sheets of concrete!

  2. I'm very happy to have read the report of the sale. It's good for the Chicago Hockey community to be able to keep such a fine rink running. Yes the ice may be a little poor, but that's because the current rink owners in a desire to save as much money as they could turned the ice equipment as high as possible. I think you will see a better sheet in the very near future.
