Parents need to demand regular hockey financials
This quote shows the dangers of apathy and ignorance:
I thought this would be a good time to remind parents to make sure you've taken part in engaging in some diligent oversight of your team's and association's financial records. There have been a number of Michigan-based youth hockey criminal activities regarding trusted league and team officials that walked off with tens of thousands of dollars because either parents and the league/team were too trusting or there was no oversight. We've shared the stories of volunteers who have walked off with association fees in Rome, NY and in Ann Arbor, the latest development being the admission of guilt from the woman in NY you can read here. We, as parents, need to be diligent in asking questions. It's our kids. It's our/their money.
Emphasis added.
My son has been with the Chargers for over a decade. Not once in all these years have I ever seen the financial records of the club. Makes one wonder what they have to hide. Large Shout out to Linda (your a great person, but very naive in this area).
ReplyDeleteDEMAND financials but be sure they are backed up! We got financial reports every single month from our treasurer but they were (we now know) falsified. Do not have just a "Treasurer" have a committee that consists of members from several age groups in your club and contains board members as well as non-board members. Be sure financial reports include income/expense reports, copies of monthly bank statments, loan statments, etc. If you have a loan with a line of credit be sure the bank requires more than one signature in order for any officer or member of the board to be allowed to w/draw money.
ReplyDeleteLearn from our mistakes...don't let this happen to your club and your children!
