Let's Play Hockey's Derek Johnson has an excellent guide on helmets titled Finding the Right Fit in Hockey Helmets. It is a good starting point for assessing if that bucket is the right size. With all the attention on concussions these days, including from us, double checking the fit of that hunk of plastic protecting the grey matter is a worthwhile thing to do on your next trip to the rink. While you are at it, evaluate the condition of the helmet. A bucket that has popped some rivets or that has grown a crack is no longer capable of doing its job. Hey, we know that a bucket can't stop a concussion all by itself, but it sure is a cheap insurance policy.
In fact, I just ordered a new helmet myself.
